PRACTICA 1/1/?

A two week durational drawing work

2021

PRACTICA 1/1/?

A live, durational drawing project made in response to the curatorial theme of Uncertainty.

Its original iteration took place over two weeks in July 2021. The first week was sited in the artist’s studio and the second week in the adjoining public gallery.

Over the two weeks, the artist repeatedly walked into the space and drew and then left the work to dry. Visitors did not know when the artist would enter or leave.

The live, durational drawing project was made in response to a drawing score (see below), which was also in exhibition. The score calls for a series of drawings to be made to the same instruction, with the same level of ‘attending to drawing’ each time. Once the capacity to ‘attend to’ drawing has been exhausted, it signals the end of a period of drawing for that day. The score also calls for work to drip at least once.

The frequency with which the artist draws, and therefore ultimately the number of drawings produced, was dictated by the process’s timeframes. Only at the end of the two weeks was the title 1/1/? resolved.

PRACTICA 1/1/? explores the slippage between the act of drawing and the drawn object, movement and stillness, gesture and stasis, practice and exhibition, research and resolution.

There is an open invitation to activate the score (below). Materials needed are are graphite powder, water, a brush and paper. If you would like to share your drawing(s) please email studiosarahtutt@gmail.com
